Description

Pyrenochaeta unguis-hominis is a dematiaceous filamentous fungus which causes infection to human. It is probably inhabit from soil and previous studies showed that it can be colonized at the nails that have been predisposed to disease and infection (1). The healthy nail will become discoloured after being infected (2). For P. unguis-hominis UM256, it has been isolated from the skin scrapping of the patient. Besides, P. unguis-hominis UM256 is also resistance to most of the antifungal agent, including ketonazole, fluconazole, intraconazole, posaconazole and caspofungin.
 

Morphological

The colonies of P. unguis-hominis are slow growing, dark green to dark grey colour and have whitish border from front. They appeared flat, from woolly to cottony. From reverse, the colonies are in dark brown colour. Septate hyphae, pycnidia, conidia, and conidiophores are observed through the light microscopy. The pycnidia of the fungus are solitary, in globose or flask-shaped, and are in brown colour to black. The pycnidia consist of several short and spare septate setae and phoma-like conidiogeneous cells. Conidiophores are branched, septate and hyaline and emerging from the inner surface of the pycnidial wall. The conida of P. unguis-hominis usually are hyaline, single, smooth wall, and short cylindrical.
