A dematiaceous fungus was isolated from a patient’s skin scraping and was identified using morphological approaches. However, this isolate was unidentifiable by the morphological characteristics. Based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-based PCR amplification and ITS sequence-based phylogenetic analysis, it was only identified to family level as Herpotrichiellaceae.


On Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, the isolate appeared as black colony with wrinkled and convoluted surface. Microscopic images showed the uniseptated or biseptated conidia arranged in a chain.
